well.. nope, kiddo, it's not mandatory. But it will impact your interview for sure. However, not directly.
See, beta, if you have great extra-curriculars, it will be easier for you to talk about yourself and thus, steer the direction of your interview, but if you do not have any extra- curriculars, chances are you won't have much to talk about yourself in the interview, in which case, the interview will take random directions. When an interviewer cna't find anything in the CV to ask questions on, he usually switches to GK and current affairs. Anything on your CV is predictable for you. And even if you can't really control the depth of the question, you can always tell a personal anecdote or story to connect with it. GK, on the other hand, is a tough nut. It's vast, unpredictable and you can't invent answers - you are either right or wrong, never in between.
So, I always tell students: you should try to give the interviewer enough material in your CV if you want a smoother, simpler interview. If you don't, well, GK, current affairs, questions related to your college subjects - that will be the impact, that's it. If you have some other hobbies or habits that are unique or impressive and good to talk about, then the problem is sorted. if not, you better develop some or start participating in the college events :)
